Honey the Beagle arrived at the SPCA of Niagara County in New York, facing the possibility of being euthanized because of her weight issues. The pup was unable to move around and had been living in less than ideal conditions in her previous residence. But as we delve deeper into Honey’s tale, it unveils some unexpected surprises along the way.
As per a statement shared on the Niagara SPCA’s Facebook account, Honey’s previous owner had dementia and would unintentionally overfeed her multiple times. This led to Honey reaching a weight of 68 pounds due to lack of exercise and excessive feedings. The owner, believing that euthanasia was the only option due to Honey’s deteriorating quality of life, made the difficult decision to rehome her.
The folks at Niagara SPCA didn’t take Honey’s condition lightly. They immediately took action by giving her a bath, enrolling her in a diet and exercise program, and treating her hypothyroidism. Their efforts paid off, with Honey managing to lose five pounds in just one week!
A recent update on Niagara SPCA’s social media highlighted the incredible efforts of the shelter’s staff and volunteers in assisting Honey, a dog facing mobility challenges. Through innovative water therapy, including the use of a water treadmill, Honey received the support she needed to move better. She also received a mobility aid for outdoor use. Thanks to their dedication, Honey started to lose weight and show signs of improvement in her overall condition.
“I was amazed at how fast things progressed,” said Sue Cable, a dedicated SPCA volunteer and caring foster dog mom, during her chat with NBC. “As soon as she found a home with room to explore, she really came into her own.”
Fantastic update for Honey’s fans – she is now available for adoption and eagerly waiting to find her forever family through the foster-to-adopt initiative! Kudos to the Niagara SPCA for their wonderful work! 😊
A recent update shared on the Niagara SPCA’s social media revealed that Honey has shed nearly 40 pounds within a short span of six months!
The lovable Beagle is just a few pounds away from being ready for adoption. The team at the SPCA is optimistic that she will be able to lose those extra pounds before she finds her forever home.
