Shrek, a sweet and lovable cat, was discovered in a feral cat colony where he was mistreated by other cats. He was underfed, covered in scars, and partially blind due to a condition called entropion. Emily Shields, the caring founder of Whiskers N Wishes Sanctuary in Marana, Arizona, took Shrek in and named him after the popular ogre character from a movie. With proper care and treatment, Shrek’s health improved and he was eventually adopted by a loving couple from New York. Now, Shrek enjoys a life of comfort as a pampered house cat. Bored Panda recently spoke with Emily, the dedicated founder of Whiskers N Wishes, a cat rescue sanctuary in Tucson. Emily always had a passion for rescuing cats and fulfilled her dream by purchasing land during the pandemic to establish the sanctuary. Over the past three years, Whiskers N Wishes has successfully found homes for 377 cats.
Whiskers N Wishes officially opened its doors in November 2020 when Emily posted an ad on CraigsList offering to take in cats in need. The response was overwhelming, with 25 inquiries within an hour. Due to the closure of shelters during COVID-19, Emily saw the urgent need to provide a safe haven for these felines. With the support of the community, she was able to purchase a property and continue expanding the sanctuary every six months to accommodate more cats.
Emily emphasized the importance of donations for covering vet bills, which amounted to $43,000 in 2023 due to the care of senior, disabled, and special needs cats. Basic supplies like food and litter are also essential, especially for cats with specific dietary requirements. Whiskers N Wishes has Amazon and Chewy wish lists for those interested in contributing.
Currently, the sanctuary can care for 40-45 cats at a time, but with ongoing expansions, Emily hopes to increase that number. The ultimate goal is to provide a loving and secure environment for as many cats as possible. If you’re looking to support a worthy cause, consider donating to Whiskers N Wishes to help them continue their important work in rescuing and caring for cats in need.
In addition to facing hunger, Shrek also had entropion which affected his vision and made it difficult for him to see properly.
We were intrigued to learn more about the start of Shrek’s journey and how he was discovered. According to Emily, Shrek was living among a group of cats near an airport in Tucson, where he was an outcast facing bullying from the others. Fortunately, he was rescued by Courtney from Poets Square Cats, a TikTok account with a massive following of over 1 million viewers. Emily recalled receiving a text from Courtney while she was at the movie theater with her kids, watching ‘Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken.’ Courtney inquired if they had room for a friendly tom cat in need of help.
Emily recounted the state Shrek was in when she first saw him. She mentioned that he appeared quite disheveled, not eating properly due to the mistreatment from the other cats. His eyes were also described as being swollen and unclean. Additionally, Shrek tested positive for FIV, a common condition among male stray cats. In Emily’s words, he looked like a complete wreck.
Thanks to a successful surgery, Shrek made a speedy recovery, surprising everyone with his stunning blue eyes.

Emily highlighted the necessity of these procedures, with Shrek suffering from entropion, a condition where the eyelids turn inwards causing discomfort. In addition to being neutered and receiving vaccinations, Shrek required surgery to correct his eye and dental problems.
In under sixty days, Shrek found his forever home with a couple living in New York. They now happily document his daily adventures as a pampered house cat.
At last, Shrek found his happily ever after and was able to leave behind his troubled past. “Shrek found a loving home with a fantastic couple in New York City who now manage his social media pages. Despite his rough start as a street cat in Arizona, he is now cherished and living an incredible life. His new dad went above and beyond, flying to Phoenix, driving to Tucson to pick up Shrek, and then making the journey back to New York all in one day to bring Shrek home!” Emily joyfully revealed.
